May is kind of a mixed bag here in Chennai. There is an indescribable heat that descends upon southern India in May. It is a kind of “hot” that is unlike anything I’ve ever experienced. I guess it’s the opposite of how people from warmer climates feel during their first Wisconsin winter.
But the beautiful orange-y colored lining on the May storm cloud is that it is mango season in India. You can’t go more than a block without seeing piles of them on the side of the road. And of course there are overflowing bins of them at every produce market.
Gavin recently traveled to Mumbai and brought home 2 dozen Alphonso mangoes, which are by far the most delicious variety in my opinion. Did you know that there are hundreds of varieties of mangoes? Something I learned since coming to India.
Needless to say, mangoes have found there way into our three squares a day. We scoop them, chop them, and smash them, then put them on ice cream, pancakes, crepes, or eat them straight out of the bowl. Or mango smoothies… mmmm… Basically we all have permanent mango mustaches.
